Final project- piece 5!

Heres my last piece ill be making for this project. I decided to go crazy with this one so I bought nails, a hammer and a wooden board.

To create contrast, I covered it with black sticker, then i hammered the nails into my design.

It was quite hard to hammer the nails perfectly straight as it was the first I ever hammer anything in my life.

Then I added the string which was very confusing at a point, but I managed to get the desired look!

Final Project- piece 4

I designed a front view of a building and played around with the position of lines, here's what I came up with.

56 Leonard, New York

A staggering building caught my attention while I was surfing the internet, only to find out its actually incomplete and will only be ready to live in in 2015. Its located in the heart of Tribeca, New York.

56 Leonard

I was curious to know the availability of the penthouses and their price, only to find out there are only 2 penthouses out of 145 available at the price of 22 million pounds.

Even selling my kidney won't help me afford such penthouse.

Final Project- Stringing it (P2)

Here is my second rooftop design:

Final project- Stringing it

The next step was the most difficult and confusing one, but I managed to get the design I wanted without messing up my work.

Final project- progress

Here are the two designs I came up with:

I punched holes using my compass for the strings to pass through, then I joined the dots together to create the design which represents where light will be focused.

Final Project- getting started

Architecture is based on how buildings react to light. I decided to design rooftops of narrow and long skyscrapers, focusing on the use of light. In order to show this really well I chose to use string art. I went for a monochrome style of a white string and black background to show a heavy contrast.

The materials I needed were:
String, needle and black paper
Graph Paper, a ruler and a pencil.

String Art

String Art is a very underrated form of Art. After doing some research, I decided that I want my final piece to be related to it. Below are a few examples of string art.

String art itself is architecture, let alone incorporating it with buildings and structure! I will create a sort of structure made of strings for my final project.

The Big Apple

New York has been a major inspiration for me and my artwork. Its architecture is breath taking and is an example of a high class living standards where people who run the world would live in, which is something I want to create in the future in Kuwait.

This is an incomplete drawing I made in my free time of New York's skyline. Might inspire me for my final project.

Louis Kahn the Legend

"To express is to drive. When you want to give something presence you have to consult nature and there is where design comes in"

Louis Kahn is an American Architect who changed the worlds perspective about Architecture. Born in 1901, he managed to design monumental buildings which really gave the feel of ancient ruins while still looking modern. That was his signature in all his buildings.

At 3 years of age, he burnt his face by holding hot coals after he was captivated by how they lit up. His father thought he should die but his mother thought it was only going to make him a stronger person, hence why he loved revealing scars and holes in his building, and never tried covering them.

Below are a couple of buildings he designed.

National Assembly Building in Dhaka, Bangladesh- 1982

Exeter Library- 1965

The Salk Institute- 1960

It took Louis Kahn a long time and a lot of ups and downs to figure out what style he wanted with his buildings, but no one can deny how fascinating his structures are,

Not only did he design interesting buildings, but he also had an interesting life. He had 3 women in his life, and one child from each wife, who only found out about each other in his funeral. He died at the age of  73 when he was bankrupt and alone after a stroke inside a toilet in a train station, having a debt of over half a million US dollars.
